PICKING A PAINTER
Any contract should include a state or
county license number as well as all details of what the job will include and
the total price for the job. Make sure you know what is NOT included
in the price too.
Avoid a large down payment and withhold the final
payment until you are satisfied with the job. Typically the amount
withheld here is around 10% - 15%. Make sure you get a copy of the
painting company’s or painter’s liability and workers compensation
insurance certificates or possibly pay a hefty price if someone working on
the job gets hurt because if the painter or painting company is not properly
insured you could be held liable for all the pain and injury medical bills
of the injured worker!
There should also be a guarantee
against chipping, peeling, blistering, flaking or excessive fading or chalking
that occurs within two years after the job is completed. The guarantee should
cost you little or nothing if the guarantee needs to be used or exercised. Remember,
the paint itself has a warranty but this may NOT include the labor to satisfy
the guarantee!
